Regenerative Tourism & Eco-Friendly Practices

At Heart of the Wye, we believe that spending time in nature should help protect and support it for future generations. As a small family-run glamping site in the Wye Valley, we aim to create a low-impact, environmentally conscious experience that encourages guests to slow down, reconnect with nature, and support the local area.
Our approach focuses not only on reducing environmental impact, but also on positively contributing to the landscape, wildlife, and rural community around us. Inspired by the principles of regenerative tourism, we are committed to continually improving our practices and making thoughtful choices that support both people and planet.
Caring for the Environment
-
Our electricity is supplied through Octopus Energy, a renewable energy provider focused on supporting greener energy use and investment in renewable electricity generation. This helps reduce the environmental impact of both the campsite and our family home.
-
Selected pathway and toilet lighting around the site is powered using solar lighting systems to help reduce energy use and minimise light pollution.
-
We aim to reduce waste wherever possible, including actively reducing single-use plastics across the site.
-
Biodegradable bin liners are used where possible, and we work closely with Herefordshire Council to ensure waste and recycling are disposed of responsibly.
-
Recycling facilities are provided across the site and guests are encouraged to recycle during their stay.
-
Guests are provided with reusable cotton canvas produce bags to use during local shopping trips and take home afterwards as a reusable bag for life.
-
We use eco-conscious cleaning and toiletry brands including Faith in Nature and Ecover, both recognised for their focus on refill systems, biodegradable ingredients, and reducing environmental impact.
-
Toiletries and cleaning products are refilled in bulk where practical to reduce unnecessary packaging waste and avoid the use of multiple single-use plastic bottles.
-
Laundry and washing are completed in-house where possible and line dried to reduce unnecessary energy use from industrial dryers.
-
Lighting across the campsite is intentionally kept low to preserve the surrounding dark skies and reduce light pollution.

Supporting Nature & Biodiversity
-
The campsite is designed to work alongside the natural landscape rather than against it, with open meadow areas, wildflowers, and habitats that support pollinators and local wildlife.
-
Areas of the site have intentionally been left to naturally rewild, including hedgerows, nettles, brambles, and native flora that provide important habitats and food sources for insects, birds, and other wildlife.
-
We keep bee colonies on site and work alongside local beekeeping organisations across the Wye Valley to help support pollinator populations.
-
During the winter months, the land returns to grazing pasture for sheep, helping maintain the traditional character and seasonal use of the landscape.
-
Wood supplied for our fire pits and wood-burning stoves is sourced locally from within the surrounding area to help support local suppliers and reduce transport impact.

Supporting Local Communities
-
We actively support local businesses and independent producers wherever possible.
-
Our on-site honesty shop includes locally produced cheeses alongside preserves and seasonal produce made using fruit grown in our orchard and foraged from local hedgerows, including apples, plums, and berries.
-
Through these small local products, we hope guests can build a stronger connection to the landscape, seasons, and food traditions of the Wye Valley.
-
We provide information on local walking routes, independent businesses, local attractions, and countryside access to encourage guests to explore the area responsibly and support the local economy.
-
Guests can also find recommendations and signposting to local businesses, producers, cafés, activities, and attractions through our website and information provided within communal guest areas.

Protecting the River Wye & Countryside Education
-
As a site located close to the River Wye, we are passionate about helping guests better understand and care for the local environment.
-
Information and educational materials from organisations such as Friends of the River Wye are available within our communal areas, including guidance on protecting the river, recognising pollution, and how to report environmental concerns.
-
Guests are welcome to take away selected educational booklets and resources to continue learning beyond their stay.
-
We encourage responsible enjoyment of the countryside and aim to provide guests with information that supports respectful use of local walking routes, wildlife areas, and rural spaces.

Low-Impact Glamping
-
Our yurts are designed to offer a comfortable off-grid style experience while encouraging guests to switch off, slow down, and reconnect with nature.
-
We intentionally keep lighting levels low and avoid creating an overly commercial environment in order to maintain the peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty of the site.
-
Shared communal spaces are designed to encourage slower, more mindful travel experiences and connection with both nature and other guests.
-
While we do not place restrictions on guest food choices, vegetarian and dairy-free alternatives can be provided on request where possible.

Looking Forward
We recognise that sustainability and regenerative tourism are ongoing journeys rather than fixed achievements. We are continually looking for new ways to work alongside local environmental organisations, improve our environmental practices, and strengthen our connection with the surrounding landscape and community.
We hope that a stay at Heart of the Wye encourages guests not only to enjoy nature, but also to feel inspired to care for and protect it long after they leave.
